Tan Twan Eng

Tan Twan Eng is a Malaysian novelist known for elegant, atmospheric fiction exploring memory, identity, colonialism and the lasting effects of political violence. Born in Penang and raised in Kuala Lumpur, he studied law and worked as an intellectual-property advocate before becoming a full-time writer. His novels are closely associated with the history of Malaya and Malaysia, particularly the Japanese occupation, the Malayan Emergency and the tensions of British colonial society. All three of his novels have received Booker Prize recognition, while The Garden of Evening Mists won both the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.

All three of Tan’s novels are historical fiction. The Gift of Rain is set in Penang during the years surrounding the Japanese invasion and occupation of Malaya and follows a mixed-race young man whose friendship with a Japanese diplomat creates painful conflicts of loyalty. The Garden of Evening Mists moves between the Japanese occupation and the Malayan Emergency, following a former prisoner of war who asks a Japanese gardener to create a memorial to her murdered sister. The House of Doors is set principally in 1921 Penang and fictionalises Somerset Maugham’s visit to Malaya, the Ethel Proudlock murder case and revolutionary Sun Yat-sen’s connections with Penang. Together, the novels examine how personal relationships are shaped by occupation, empire, war and contested historical memory.
