Book 3 in the Tom Ansell Cathedral Mysteries series.

Cambridge and Ely, mid-1870s. After elderly solicitor Alexander Lye dies at his desk, Tom Ansell is sent to Phoenix House near Ely to find the will that should settle his estate. The search brings him into conflict with Lye’s brother Ernest and a family whose present tensions are rooted in records from the English Civil War.

Helen travels nearby on a journalistic assignment, allowing the couple to pursue separate strands of the case through university and cathedral society. A modern murder and the account of a death in 1645 gradually converge, forcing Tom to decide whether the missing testament was concealed for money, reputation or fear of what an older document would reveal.
