Tom Ansell Cathedral Mysteries

The Tom Ansell Cathedral Mysteries follow a young London solicitor and his wife Helen through Salisbury, Durham, Cambridge and Ely in the mid-1870s. Legal instructions involving manuscripts, wills and family property draw them into murders hidden behind cathedral respectability, private houses and the authority of established professional men.

Each novel uses a different Victorian challenge to historical evidence: antiquarian excavation and secret memoirs, fraudulent spiritualism and stage magic, or a disputed testament connected to Civil War memory. Rail travel, journalism and Helen’s developing career widen the investigations beyond local society, while the marriage gives the series two complementary perspectives on law, reputation and domestic power.
