The Bride Stone

England, 1796. Duval Harlington returns after imprisonment at La Force in revolutionary France, sustained by memories of the family estate at Muchmore. He finds his father dead, the household in disorder and a will that makes his inheritance conditional on immediate marriage. At a public wife sale he impulsively bids for Edmée, a composed young woman whose apparent vulnerability conceals a carefully protected identity.

The marriage of convenience becomes a mystery as Edmée’s past threatens the estate and the fragile trust growing between them. The novel places romantic adventure within late Georgian systems of property, inheritance and informal marital separation, while the aftershocks of the French Revolution remain close at hand. Rather than treating marriage as a simple rescue, the story asks what consent and loyalty can mean in a society where estates, names and women’s futures are routinely controlled by male authority.
