Seventeen years after the fall of the Third Reich, Auschwitz survivor Max Weill is dying with one unfinished task: finding Dr. Otto Schramm, the fictional camp doctor who helped murder his family and escaped to South America after the war. Max asks his nephew Aaron Wiley, an American CIA desk analyst, to continue the search and bring Schramm back to Germany to face justice.
Aaron travels to Buenos Aires, where former Nazis have built new lives inside a society willing to ignore or protect them. Assisted by a German reporter, an Israeli agent and the local CIA station, he approaches Schramm through the fugitive’s daughter and discovers that capturing a war criminal is morally less simple than identifying one. The novel uses the real post-war hunt for Nazi fugitives in Argentina as the framework for a thriller about memory, responsibility and the danger of making another person answer for a parent’s crimes.
