New Mexico, spring 1945. As the Manhattan Project races to complete the first atomic bomb, security officer Karl Bruner is found murdered in Santa Fe. Intelligence officer Michael Connolly is sent to investigate quietly, because almost any public inquiry could expose the secret community at Los Alamos or reveal information about a project whose existence is itself classified.
Connolly moves through a closed world of scientists, soldiers and émigrés organised around J. Robert Oppenheimer’s laboratory and General Leslie Groves’s military command. His investigation becomes entangled with private relationships and security fears while the project moves towards the Trinity test in July 1945. The novel combines murder mystery and espionage with the documented pressure of the Manhattan Project, placing fictional loyalties and betrayals beside the real scientific programme that transformed the war and the twentieth century.
