Passengers board the train from Ostend to Istanbul carrying ambitions and fears that gradually connect their separate journeys. Jewish businessman Carleton Myatt becomes involved with the chorus girl Coral Musker, while the revolutionary physician Dr Czinner attempts to return secretly to political struggle in the Balkans.
The luxury of the train cannot protect its passengers from prejudice, poverty or state violence once they leave western Europe. Personal desire and political commitment collide at the borders, where police and informers determine who may continue. The novel was published in the United States as Orient Express.
