In 50 BCE Caesar’s command is ending and his enemies in the Senate demand that he surrender his army. Cicero attempts negotiation while Pompey’s support gives the anti-Caesarian faction confidence that force can remove their rival. Lucius Oppius, tired of campaigning and drawn towards a private future, recognises that a soldier who has served Caesar cannot easily become neutral.
The political crisis moves between Rome and Caesar’s camp at Ravenna until the general crosses the Rubicon as an enemy of the state. Oppius is caught between personal desire, military comradeship and the knowledge that both leaders claim to defend the Republic. The novella presents civil war as a sequence of choices whose participants understand the danger but cannot accept the loss of honour or power required to avoid it.
