In 1349 the English possession of Calais is threatened by a French plot to recover the port. Sir Hugh Grey survives an assassination attempt by his French counterpart and travels with William Gower to join Edward III and the Prince of Wales. Grey crosses into enemy territory to hunt the opposing spymaster while Gower remains with the force preparing to defend the town.
The attack is led by Geoffroi de Charny, whose reputation for chivalry does not make the contest less deceptive or bloody. Foreman uses the historical attempt on Calais to continue the careers of Gower and Grey and to show how siege, intelligence and negotiated betrayal overlap. The port is valuable not as a symbol alone but as the logistical base upon which future English campaigns in France depend.
