Spies of Rome

Spies of Rome follows the poet Rufus Varro and his former-gladiator bodyguard Manius as reluctant agents of Marcus Agrippa during the first years of Augustus’s rule. The original trilogy investigates a coup, a slave trader’s murder and a killing connected to the imperial household. Three later novellas send Varro against a smuggler, into a private gladiator school and to Capua after the murder of an assassin.

The sequence combines crime fiction with political espionage. Peace has returned publicly, but Agrippa’s network still depends upon surveillance, informers and selective violence. Varro’s access comes from friendship and social conversation rather than official rank, making each assignment a test of whether the regime’s security justifies betraying the people who trust him.
