Ring of Spies
After the Allied airborne disaster at Arnhem in 1944, a traumatised officer becomes convinced that German forces knew too much about the operation in advance. Richard Prince is drawn into an MI5 counter-intelligence investigation in London, where suspicion falls on the possibility that an enemy agent has penetrated the British military establishment.
The suspected spy ring is fictional, while the Arnhem fighting and Operation Market Garden provide the documented military setting that gives the investigation its urgency. Gerlis uses the historical failure of the airborne operation to explore the uncertainty created when defeat raises questions about intelligence leaks, betrayal and institutional trust.
