As war approaches, British spymaster Barnaby Allen builds a network inside Germany that includes an American journalist and the wife of an SS officer. The agents move through a Berlin in which surveillance, loyalty and political status can change rapidly, while attempting to obtain German military secrets without exposing one another.
Their most dramatic intelligence concerns a Japanese plan to strike the United States, linking the fictional Wolf Pack to the wider movement towards Pearl Harbor. Gerlis uses real pre-war and wartime political conditions, but the network and its direct access to the Japanese plan are fictional. The novel begins the three-book Wolf Pack Spies sequence.
