Caught Out contains two connected Raffles stories. In the title case, Bunny and Raffles help the celebrated batsman known as Ranji recover a ruby ring from the enigmatic widow Iris Adams. Diplomacy gives way to burglary, but Iris possesses secrets and skills that make her more than an ordinary victim. The encounter tests whether Raffles has finally met an equal.

The second story, Stumped, returns to an earlier period when Bunny is threatened by the moneylender Alexander Cardinal. Raffles must raise a large sum with almost no preparation. Together the cases contrast an elaborate social theft with an urgent rescue, while continuing the series’ central tension between friendship and manipulation: Bunny depends upon Raffles, but dependence repeatedly places him in danger.

The two episodes also reveal different forms of vulnerability within the partnership. Bunny’s debts make him dependent upon Raffles, while Raffles’s encounter with Iris threatens his confidence that he can always control the social situation he enters. Crime remains playful on the surface, but the stories repeatedly show how quickly financial weakness or emotional attachment can turn a game into real danger.
