After Mary Flanagan’s disappearance, Raffles is listless until an invitation arrives for a house party hosted by Lord Rosebery. The former prime minister’s wealth presents what Raffles calls a perfect wicket, and he begins planning a robbery among guests who assume that reputation and class guarantee security. Bunny hopes the scheme will restore his friend’s confidence.

The weekend is complicated by the arrival of a senior policeman who has been warned that a notorious burglar intends to strike. Raffles must perform the role of celebrated cricketer while identifying how much the authorities know. The story uses the rituals of aristocratic hospitality as both disguise and trap, forcing Bunny to decide whether loyalty requires helping Raffles proceed or preventing a crime likely to expose them both.
