After her missionary family is killed during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Rebecca Ravenshaw returns to Hampshire to claim Headbourne House. She discovers that another woman had already appeared under her name, died in suspicious circumstances and left the estate in the hands of Captain Luke Whitfield, a distant relative whose welcome cannot erase his interest in the property.
Rebecca must prove her identity while investigating the earlier imposture and deciding whether Luke is protector, opportunist or murderer. The novel combines a country-house mystery with romance and Christian reflection, using grief, imperial displacement and restrictive inheritance practices to test whether trust can rest on evidence rather than social reputation.
