In London in 1757, Major Lord John Grey is ordered to investigate the murder of a fellow officer suspected of selling military secrets. At the same time, he privately examines evidence that could expose a scandal involving his cousin’s intended husband. The two inquiries lead through army offices, brothels, noble households and the affairs of the East India Company as Grey tries to protect both his family and the Crown.

Grey’s investigations are constrained by reputation. An accusation involving sexual conduct could damage his family, while espionage inside the army threatens national security during wartime. He must therefore work discreetly in both cases and judge witnesses who have strong reasons to lie.
