This biography follows Katherine Swynford from the household of Blanche of Lancaster to her long relationship and eventual marriage with John of Gaunt. Their four Beaufort children were legitimised and became ancestors of later royal dynasties, giving a private partnership major consequences for the succession. Weir reconstructs Katherine’s life from fragmentary records and places her within the Hundred Years’ War, the late medieval court and the wider Chaucer family.
