Philippa Roet

Philippa Roet was a woman of the royal household, the sister of Katherine Swynford and the wife of Geoffrey Chaucer. She served Philippa of Hainault and later members of the Lancastrian circle, linking her to both court administration and literary culture. The surviving record reveals payments and household connections but little about her personality or marriage. Through her family she stood close to John of Gaunt and the future Beaufort dynasty.

Philippa’s marriage connected Geoffrey Chaucer to a family increasingly close to John of Gaunt: her sister Katherine Swynford became Gaunt’s long-term partner and later wife. Philippa herself appears intermittently in household and financial records, including royal annuities, but the evidence remains fragmentary. Her life is therefore important less for documented personal actions than for the courtly and familial network surrounding Chaucer and the Lancastrian household.

Philippa Roet is present in P. C. Doherty’s Chaucer and the Doctor of Physic and Chaucer and the Legend of Good Women as Philippa Chaucer, whose position at court and concern for her sister Katherine connect Geoffrey Chaucer’s investigations to the household of John of Gaunt.
