Rebellion continues to trouble Henry IV as illness and the burdens of kingship weaken him. Prince Hal remains divided between the court and Falstaff’s world, while royal forces suppress the remaining northern opposition through negotiation, betrayal and military pressure.
The king’s death forces Hal to abandon the uncertainty of youth and assume the crown as Henry V. Falstaff expects advancement from his old companion but is publicly rejected. The play turns political succession into a personal break, contrasting the disorder and improvisation of tavern life with the discipline required to stabilise a contested monarchy.
