Rather than presenting a continuous autobiography, the memoir is built from episodes chosen for what memory has made of them. Faulks reflects on the writing of Birdsong, literary success, politics, psychiatry and his parents, using personal recollection to describe the social and cultural changes through which his own life has passed.
