Crusaders traces the armed religious movements that carried Latin Christian armies into the eastern Mediterranean from the late eleventh century onwards. Dan Jones begins with the preaching and violence of the First Crusade, then follows the creation of crusader states, the responses of Muslim rulers, the role of Byzantium and the repeated expeditions launched to defend or recover Jerusalem and other sacred territories.
The narrative treats crusading as a changing political and social phenomenon rather than a single continuous war. Kings, pilgrims, merchants, military orders and local communities appear alongside figures such as Saladin and Richard I. The United States edition was published as Crusaders: The Epic History of the Wars for the Holy Lands. The book emphasises competing ambitions, coexistence as well as conflict, and the long human cost of wars justified through faith.
