The Tale of the Tailor and the Three Dead Kings

A tailor named Snowball is travelling through the winter darkness of medieval Yorkshire when he encounters three richly dressed corpses. The dead kings rise to confront him with a supernatural spectacle of decay, rank and mortality, transforming an ordinary journey into a warning that worldly power cannot resist death. Dan Jones retells the surviving Middle English story in direct modern prose while preserving its unsettling imagery and dark humour.

The narrative belongs to the medieval tradition of the Three Living and the Three Dead, in which the powerful are forced to see their own future in the bodies of the deceased.
