Blitzkrieg

by Len Deighton

First published 1979

4.3(483)

Deighton examines the political and military developments that allowed Germany to overturn the European balance of power in the opening years of the Second World War. Beginning with Hitler’s rise and German rearmament, he follows the invasion of Poland, the use of armour and air power, and the campaign in the west that drove Allied forces toward Dunkirk.

The book is especially concerned with organisation, doctrine and decision-making rather than the idea of blitzkrieg as a single revolutionary formula. Maps, technical explanation and accounts of commanders show how training, communications, mobility and enemy mistakes combined to produce victories that later acquired an aura of inevitability.
