In the last years of independent Saite Egypt, Pharaoh Amasis tries to preserve his kingdom while the expanding Persian Empire presses towards the Nile. The fate of the princess Nitetis becomes bound to Persian dynastic politics, and the deception surrounding her identity helps turn personal grievance into a crisis between kingdoms.
The story ranges from Egypt to the Achaemenid court and follows figures including the Persian prince Bartja and the young Darius through intrigue, romance, succession and conquest. Ebers uses the collision between Egyptian, Persian and Greek worlds to dramatise the end of one political order and the rise of another.
