The novel presents medieval Nuremberg as a working city of merchants, craftsmen, guild interests and civic authority rather than merely a picturesque backdrop. Court favour and urban reputation matter alongside family loyalty, giving the romance a strong sense of the political and economic life of the Holy Roman Empire.
