Gordon Doherty is a Scottish author of historical adventure novels, particularly stories set in the ancient and early medieval worlds. His interest in history developed through visits to Roman remains in Britain and archaeological sites in Greece and Turkey. His fiction combines extensive historical research with military action, political rivalry and characters caught within the decline or transformation of powerful empires. His work ranges from the Bronze Age and Classical Greece to the later Roman and Byzantine empires.

Doherty’s long-running Legionary series begins with Legionary and follows Pavo, a soldier serving on the threatened frontiers of the late Roman Empire during the Gothic wars. The Strategos trilogy, beginning with Born in the Borderlands, is set during the Byzantine–Seljuk conflicts of the eleventh century, while the six-volume Empires of Bronze series follows the Hittite prince Hattu through the wars and political upheavals of the thirteenth century BCE. Doherty also co-wrote the Rise of Emperors trilogy with Simon Turney, produced the novelisation of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and began the Age of Attila series with The Eagle and the Wolf, centred on Attila and the Roman general Flavius Aetius.
