Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American novelist best known for creating Tarzan and John Carter of Mars. His fiction ranges from medieval England and Imperial Rome to the Apache Wars, the American frontier, early twentieth-century Africa, Prohibition-era California and the two World Wars. For Historical Book Shelf, his Earth-set historical and period adventures are the most relevant, while stories whose principal setting is Mars, Venus, Pellucidar, the Moon, a future or parallel Earth, or another essentially fantastic world are better excluded.

Among his historical novels, The Outlaw of Torn is set in medieval England, while I Am a Barbarian takes place in Rome during the reign of Caligula; Burroughs’ official bibliography groups both within his Historical series. His Apache novels, The War Chief and Apache Devil, are also particularly suitable for Historical Book Shelf, drawing on the Apache Wars and incorporating real figures including Geronimo, Cochise and General Nelson Miles. Burroughs’ official site describes The War Chief as a “realistic historical novel,” reflecting the more grounded historical approach he sometimes adopted outside his better-known fantasy and adventure series.
