Burroughs builds the story around mistaken identity, crime, class assumptions and the tension between respectable small-town society and people living at its margins.
Roads, small towns, police pursuit and rigid expectations about class and gender place the mystery squarely in the United States of the 1910s. Burroughs uses disguise and mistaken identity to challenge the speed with which respectable society judges outsiders, especially those who have little power to defend their reputations.
