Pirate Blood
Johnny LaFitte, a modern American with a famous pirate name in his family history, is drawn from ordinary life toward aircraft, crime and violent adventure far from home. Burroughs plays with the idea of inherited temperament as LaFitte confronts modern forms of lawlessness rather than the sailing-ship piracy of an earlier century.
Written in 1932, the novel belongs to the interwar world of aircraft, international travel and modern criminal networks rather than the 1970 date of its eventual publication. Johnny's inherited fascination with piracy becomes a question of whether violence is destiny or choice when twentieth-century lawlessness offers him the chance to test the legend of his name.
