The War Chief
Andy MacDuff is taken as an infant during an Apache raid, adopted into Geronimo’s family and raised as Shoz-Dijiji, or Black Bear. He grows into an accomplished hunter and warrior while his personal rivalry with Juh and his love for Ish-kay-nay unfold against reservation policy, warfare and the mounting pressure of United States expansion.
Set during the final decades of armed Apache resistance, the story brings Shoz-Dijiji into the world of Cochise, Geronimo, reservation confinement and repeated clashes with the United States Army. Burroughs combines those historical pressures with a fictional coming-of-age story about identity, loyalty and the cost of dispossession.
