Multan Rebellion
1848–1849 CE
The Multan Rebellion began during the attempted transfer of provincial authority from Dewan Mulraj to a successor appointed by the Lahore government under British supervision. Two British officers accompanying the new governor were attacked and killed.
Mulraj became the centre of resistance at Multan, while Herbert Edwardes raised irregular forces and fought to contain the uprising before a large regular army could arrive. The crisis exposed the weakness of the supervised Lahore government.
The prolonged conflict around Multan provided the spark and initial military theatre for the wider Second Anglo-Sikh War.
