Reign of Antoninus Pius

Antoninus Pius succeeded Hadrian in AD 138 and governed largely from Italy through established officials and provincial commanders. His reign is often remembered for administrative continuity, but the frontiers still required military action and political judgement.

In Britain, Roman forces advanced north and constructed the Antonine Wall before later withdrawing towards Hadrian’s Wall. Garrisons, supply routes and civilian settlements remained vulnerable to local resistance, crime and the consequences of imperial policy.

The period provides a useful setting for frontier mysteries because apparently stable government depended on distant forts and individuals acting with limited oversight. Simon Turney’s Valens stories use northern Britain during this reign.
