England, 991. Olaf Tryggvason and Sweyn Forkbeard threaten the kingdom with powerful Viking fleets, forcing Ealdorman Byrhtnoth of Essex to confront an invasion with inadequate support. Beside him stands Beornoth, torn between his duty to the kingdom and the people he wishes to protect. The campaign builds towards the Battle of Maldon, where loyalty, courage and failures of command determine the fate of Byrhtnoth's army.
Maldon becomes the test of a kingdom that knows the Viking threat but cannot reliably coordinate its response. Beornoth’s loyalty to Byrhtnoth places him inside decisions where honour and tactical judgement may point in different directions. The novel uses the historical battle to explore how local leadership, personal oath and royal weakness shape resistance before the later Danish conquest of England.
