Thomas of Hookton, a young English archer, joins Edward III’s armies after Norman raiders destroy his Dorset village and steal the relic guarded by his father. His pursuit of the attackers takes him into Brittany, where he helps capture La Roche-Derrien, and then into the 1346 Crécy campaign, including the assault on Caen and the fighting at Blanchetaque.

Thomas’s private search for the Harlequin and the stolen relic becomes inseparable from the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War. The novel culminates at the Battle of Crécy, where English and Welsh longbowmen confront a much larger French army and Thomas discovers that his family’s secret may be connected to the Holy Grail.
