In 1347 Martin Kemp serves among the English troops maintaining the siege of Calais after the victory at Crécy. Disease, hunger and raids make the marsh-bound encampment as dangerous as open battle, while the French attempt to relieve the port and restore their damaged military reputation.
Kemp survives a surprise attack and sees hope in a negotiated truce, but the habits and obligations of war are not easily abandoned. The novel follows the closing stages of the Calais campaign and the uncertain lives of soldiers caught between siege duty, private violence and temporary peace.
