Condottieri were military entrepreneurs who contracted their services to communes, princes, papal authorities and rival city-states. Their companies could provide cavalry, infantry, siege expertise and political leverage in a peninsula where war was often fought through negotiated service as much as dynastic loyalty.

This system mattered because military power in late-medieval Italy was fragmented and commercialised. A captain’s reputation, payment, hostages, local connections and shifting alliances could determine whether a city was defended, betrayed or forced into negotiation.
