Cassius Dio

155–235

Cassius Dio was a Roman senator and Greek historian whose Roman History is a major source for the Republic and Empire.

Cassius Dio wrote in Greek and served in high Roman office. His Roman History ran from Rome’s foundation to his own age, with especially important surviving sections on the late Republic, Augustus, the Julio-Claudians and later imperial politics.

For the site, Dio belongs in Classical for pages on Roman political history, civil war, imperial succession and senatorial interpretation of power. He is particularly important where other sources are fragmentary or hostile.
