Euripides

Euripides was an Athenian tragedian whose plays often examine war, gender, outsiders and the instability of heroic values.

Euripides wrote tragedies including Medea, Hippolytus, The Bacchae, The Trojan Women and Electra. His plays frequently give forceful voices to women, foreigners, captives and people damaged by war or religious certainty.

He is useful for Classical pages dealing with Greek tragedy, the Trojan War tradition, Dionysiac religion and the social pressures of late fifth-century Athens. His work is also important for modern retellings that foreground women and defeated communities.
