Antonina

Antonina was a sixth-century Byzantine patrician and the wife of Justinian I’s most celebrated general, Belisarius. She accompanied him during major phases of the imperial reconquests and appears in the sources around the Vandalic and Gothic wars, court politics and the removal of powerful opponents. Antonina was also closely connected to Empress Theodora, and contemporary evidence presents her as a political actor capable of carrying messages, arranging alliances and intervening in disputes that extended far beyond a conventional military household.

Most detailed stories about Antonina come from Procopius, who knew Belisarius’ circle but wrote about it in radically different modes. His Wars supplies narrative evidence for campaigns and political manoeuvring, while the hostile Secret History accuses Antonina of sexual misconduct, manipulation and domination of her husband. Those allegations cannot simply be repeated as neutral fact. Her exact birth date is unknown, and even her death is not securely dated; she survived into the middle decades of Justinian’s reign and appears to have outlived Belisarius.

Robert Graves makes Antonina a major presence in Count Belisarius, using the tensions between Procopius’ public and scandalous accounts to dramatise marriage, loyalty and court intrigue. Ian Hughes’ non-fiction Belisarius discusses her as part of the general’s political world and treats the source problems more directly. Julian Stockwin’s The Silk Tree places her within the Constantinopolitan court background of Justinian’s reign rather than offering a biographical reconstruction.
