Caracalla grows up inside the dynasty created by Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, sharing imperial status with his brother Geta while courtiers turn rivalry between the two heirs into a question of survival. Military expectations and family pressure leave little space for ordinary affection.
After Severus’s death, joint rule rapidly becomes impossible. Geta’s murder, the extension of citizenship and Caracalla’s devotion to the army define a reign driven by insecurity and movement. The novel approaches the emperor through the household that shaped him, showing how dynastic competition and the need to appear invulnerable can convert fear into violence.
