As Shadows Haunting
First published 1993
In 1759, fourteen-year-old Lady Sarah Lennox enters London society and attracts the attention of the young George III. Their attachment grows as he approaches the throne, but dynastic politics and the objections of his advisers make Sarah an unsuitable royal bride. Amid the emotional pressure she begins seeing a mysterious red-haired woman whose appearances suggest that her own life is being observed from another time.
More than two centuries later the harpsichordist Sidonie Brooks moves near Holland House and experiences visions that draw her into Sarah’s world. As Sidonie’s musical career and relationships develop, the two women’s lives begin to echo one another across time. Lake combines the documented youthful romance of Sarah Lennox and George III with a supernatural double narrative about memory, desire and the possibility that intense experience can survive the people who first lived it.
