Abbess Helewise is summoned by Eleanor of Aquitaine to discuss the building of a chapel at Hawkenlye, bringing the abbey into direct contact with one of the most powerful women of the Angevin dynasty. At the same time Sir Josse d’Acquin follows rumours of mysterious knights accused of devil worship and traces them across the Channel.
Josse’s pursuit leads him to Chartres, where the supposed conspiracy becomes entangled with Joanna and dangers that reach into his own private life.
