October 1604. The case draws Gabriel back into the maritime world he thought he had left and tests his medical and observational methods against sailors’ fear, secrecy and the consequences of an Atlantic voyage. Plymouth harbour, overseas trade and the confined social order of a ship give the mystery a broader Jacobean horizon than his earlier Devon investigations.
