June 1604. Gabriel Taverner is called to examine an emaciated vagrant whose condition seems at first to belong to the ordinary hardships of rural Devon. A disturbing discovery connected with the man, however, opens a trail into events buried for fourteen years and raises questions that local respectability has kept hidden.
Working again with Coroner Theophilus Davey, Gabriel uses medicine and observation to test stories shaped by fear, memory and old wrongdoing. The investigation develops the early Jacobean setting of the series through parish life, local authority and the fragile position of people who have no household or patron to protect them.
