The journey to Messina and Cyprus carries Berengaria through political danger, sea travel and war before her marriage to Richard and arrival in the crusading world shaped by his conflict with Saladin.
Rather than treating Berengaria as a figure at the edge of Richard’s legend, the novel places her experience at its centre. Marriage, queenship and the demand for an heir unfold against the hazards of crusade and Richard’s later captivity. McGrath combines royal biography with an adventure across medieval Europe and the Levant, following a queen whose position is defined by a famous husband but whose own endurance gives the story its perspective.
