In early eighteenth-century Sussex, Sir Richard Gyfford surprises Lady Helen D’Arcy while she is attempting to recover a compromising letter. What begins with burglary and suspicion becomes an entanglement of family loyalty, romantic misunderstanding and the competing claims of Gyfford’s circle, including the dangerous influence of his cousin Julian.

Farnol uses the country houses and roads of early Georgian Sussex for a story in which reputation can be damaged as effectively by a document as by a sword. The stolen letter gives private conduct political and social consequences, while Gyfford and Helen must decide how far trust can survive concealment. The novel combines domestic intrigue with the physical adventure expected of Farnol’s Georgian romances.
