The Jasper Shrig Mysteries connect eight historical adventures through the recurring Bow Street investigator whose patient observation repeatedly cuts through disguise, inherited grievance and misleading respectability. Beginning with Peregrine’s Progress, where Shrig enters a road adventure, the sequence develops into increasingly explicit murder and inheritance mysteries set across early nineteenth-century England, from Sussex country houses and Georgian estates to the Cornish coast and the Thames.

Farnol never abandons romance, physical courage or the open-road atmosphere of his earlier fiction, so Shrig operates inside adventures rather than in a sealed detective world. His presence nevertheless changes their logic: violence must be explained, testimony compared and family history reconstructed. Across the sequence, Bow Street criminal investigation becomes a counterweight to the social power of wealth and title, particularly when murder is hidden behind inheritance or reputation.
