Phase
1302–1332 CE
After Robert II of Artois died, the county passed to his daughter Mahaut rather than to her nephew Robert III. Robert repeatedly sought to reverse the settlement through royal courts and political pressure.
The dispute became entangled with the marriages of Mahaut's daughters into the royal family. Robert later used forged documents in support of his claim and was condemned and exiled.
Druon makes the rivalry between Mahaut and Robert one of the main narrative threads linking the fall of the Capetians with the opening of the Hundred Years' War.
