In Thebes during the reign of Ramesses II, the lives of priests, physicians, soldiers and noble households become entangled with that of Uarda, a young woman whose origins place her outside the secure ranks of Egyptian society. Court ambition, temple authority and personal loyalties shape a story in which love repeatedly collides with status and religious duty.

Ebers sets the private drama against imperial Egypt at the height of Ramesside power, moving between palaces, temples, workshops and military affairs. His background as an Egyptologist gives the novel an unusually detailed nineteenth-century reconstruction of ancient Egyptian customs, belief and material life.
