Set in France during the late 1620s, Lord Montagu’s Page follows English and French characters through the court and military politics of Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu. Service in a great household opens doors but also exposes a young attendant to secrets, rival patronage and conflicts whose meaning is not always obvious to those carrying messages or obeying orders. James makes the page’s subordinate position useful: important events are seen from close range without granting the protagonist control over them.

The historical setting includes the final stages of the crown’s struggle with organised Huguenot political power and the settlement associated with the Peace of Alès in 1629. Richelieu’s France is presented as a monarchy becoming more disciplined and centralised, yet still dependent on aristocratic networks and personal service. Adventure and romance develop inside that tension between older noble autonomy and stronger royal government.
